Move on to form another ‘subservient’ EC: BNP
BNP today alleged that the government is again conspiring to form another ‘subservient’ Election Commission (EC) to overcome another challenge of the next general election.
“The government has said they’ll reconstitute the EC as per the Constitution by forming a search committee...we’d seen you in the past forming the current Commission with the people of your choice through a search committee. They’ve already proved them worthless, incompetent and submissive one,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a protest rally, he further said, “Now again they’re plotting to make a subservient Election Commission to pass the election challenge.”
The BNP leader called upon people from all walks of life to be vocal against the government’s move and create a strong resistance against it. “We must get united putting aside all the divisions among us to defeat the evil forces. No one will be able to suppress us.”
Dhaka city unit BNP arranged the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh protesting the punishment against BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka in a ‘false’ case and confiscating his wealth.
Khoka has long been receiving treatment in the USA reportedly for cancer.
Fakhrul said the country’s people are now passing through a suffocating situation by losing their all rights, including that of voting and freedom of expression. “The government is working in a planned way to wipe out opposition parties and alternative opinions.”
He alleged that the government is also controlling the media, judiciary, the EC, administration, law enforcement agencies and all other agencies to fortify one-party rule. “We become very concerned about the future of the country’s democracy when Awami League speaks about democracy after destroying all the democratic institutions.”
The BNP leader alleged that the ruling party men have been indulging in widespread plundering public money in the name of development activities.
“The ruling party leaders are looting most of the money being spent on roads and other development activities. A grand festival of plundering has been going on when the country’s people are struggling to cope with skyrocketing prices of the essentials,” he alleged.
Fakhrul said their party has repeatedly been calling upon the ruling party for engaging in dialogue and reaching an understanding as it believes in democracy and peaceful politics. “But, don’t consider it as our weakness.”
