DC hasn't yet figured out how group presentations work
Not everyone in the classroom has to be hilarious to be popular. DC Extended Universe gets constantly compared to Marvel Cinematic Universe for obvious reasons. Some of the comparisons, however, are unjust. To begin with, MCU has had 8 years to perfect a recipe that ensures moviegoers – fanboys/girls or not – leave the theatre satisfied. DCEU is just getting off the ground. So far it has done alright with a standalone project [yes, I thought Man of Steel worked as a reboot]; it just needs to figure out how to ace group presentations.
I've been asked whether Suicide Squad is worth 2+ hours and 400+ taka. I'll try to be as precise as possible.
What's up: After the demise of Superman in Dawn of Justice, ruthless high-ranking intelligence officer, Amanda Waller, uses the fear of super/metahumans to bully the government into sanctioning a group of the top incarcerated criminals for suicide missions against incredible threats in exchange of shorter prison time. This A-team consists of suave hitman Deadshot (Will Smith), uber hot and uber crazy Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), ancient witch Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), human flamethrower El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), human crocodile Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and waste of screen space from Down Under Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney).
What's hot: Viola Davis owns the role of Waller. She bulldozes every scene with badassery and unflinching attitude. Director David Ayer gets an A+ for casting Davis in this role. I want to see her in future DCEU movies. I'd give the silver medal to Margot Robbie. She basically is whatever fun this movie has to offer.
What's not: The trailers and teasers showing off Jared Leto's Joker created a whole lot of hype. Well, disappointment awaits you, fanboys/girls. Maybe it was the editing or the script itself that rendered Joker utterly unnecessary to the plot. He only serves as Quinn's backstory, which in my opinion could have been played by any random actor and didn't need an Oscar-winning thespian. It was sad to watch Will Smith play a bland Deadshot and deliver lukewarm one-liners. Rest of the posse were so forgettable, I don't see the need to discuss them.
So, should you go to the theatre to watch Suicide Squad? Yes, you should. There are many worse ways to spend 2+ hours and 400+ taka.
