AL activist hacked to death in Rajshahi
Unknown assailants hacked to death a cousin and assistant of local Awami League lawmaker Kazi Abdul Wadud Dara at his rented room in Puthia upazila yesterday, allegedly over political rivalry.
Aminul Islam Royal, 29, an AL activist and son of Wajed Sheikh of Biraldaha village, died in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 8:00am, about six hours after the attack, said Abu Obaida Khan, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station.
The assailants hacked his throat, neck and chopped off his left wrist, said doctors who performed a surgery on the victim for four hours before he died.
Aminul came under the attack around 2:00am at his rented room of the one-story house owned by one Yakub Ali. Yakub's wife Jomela Begum, 48, said she heard the victim groaning but when she tried to come out she found her door locked from outside. “As I opened my window, I saw Aminul, smeared with blood all over his body, crawling in the courtyard in front of his room.”
She said she came out of her house after Aminul opened her door.
Talking to reporters, Dara said Aminul named some of his killers on his way to hospital and all the named persons were his political rivals belonging to the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
“He was active in politics and always stayed with me. The killers actually threatened me with murdering him as the parliamentary election is around the corner."
Some local politicians said the murder might be a retaliation of the killings of BNP leader Abu Daud Hossain and his son Nur Nabi Nuhu in 2009 and in 2010 respectively.
The OC, however, said police could not immediately ascertain the motive of the murder. He said none was arrested as no case was filed yet.
The body was kept in RMCH for autopsy.
