Be the belle of the ball this BOISHAKH !
It is here again, that magical time of the year when the age-old Bengali spirit of festivity and frolic is renewed to welcome the Bengali New Year. Pohela Boishakh is just around the corner and there are preparations galore to celebrate. So how does a fashionista prepare herself to face an occasion that involves boundless fun and frolic and inclement weather at the same time? Of course, the look in question has to be trendy as well as ethnic, keeping in with the spirit of the day.
Since the beginning of this year makeup trends everywhere have undergone several subtle changes. The classic smoky eye colour palette of black, grey or charcoal has been replaced with bold colours such as teal, turquoise and green to elevate the look to the next level. There has been abundant use of jewel tones such as shimmery purple, navy and sparkling deep green to heighten the glam quotient. For us Bengali women, our eyes have and will always remain the central focus, and these trends can be easily incorporated in makeup to attain an ethnic yet modern look. Renowned makeup artist Farzana Shakil's picks for the season include smoky eye done with colourful metallic eye shadows in turquoise, blue and green. The quintessential thick kohl-rimmed eye is eternal and will always remain in vogue; however this subtle tweak can be a refreshing twist. It can also be a saviour during the daytime when heavy, dark eye makeup may seem too harsh and dated. In terms of lip colours, Shakil predicts that shades of red will reign supreme this year to pertain to the vibrant red borders of the Boishakhi sarees, but the shades can vary can from a berry lip stain to shades of brick and vermillion. Young girls can go for lip gloss as it gives a sheer, sweet effect compared to a deep lipstick which can be aging. Nudes will be very big too, particularly those with brown undertones to work well with all complexions. Peach or light brown blush is perfect to bring some colour and nicely finish out the face. A lovely red teep is a must for Pohela Boishakh and should not be avoided. The rule of thumb remains; focus either on the eyes or lips, never both together!
While makeup is one of the most important considerations for the day, Farzana Shakil is also quick to highlight the need to pay careful attention to hairstyles for Boishakh. This year hair can be worn in a multitude of ways, depending on your wish. As the days are getting hotter, you can wear your long locks in a thick plait and accessorise with the fragrant jasmine strings coiled around it. Buns and updos are having a moment now, and choosing to put your hair up can keep you cool and calm. Those with short hair can get loose, beachy curls or waves and tuck a flower or two behind the ear to channel a Bohemian vibe. Lastly leaving your hair open is also a great option, but don't forget to accessorise with fresh seasonal blooms, a big smile and that infectious Bangaliana this Boishakh!
