Wounded rescuer to be flown to S’pore
A rescuer, who sustained burn injuries while trying to rescue trapped garment worker Shaheena from Rana Plaza rubble Sunday night, will be flown to Singapore for treatment.
Azaz Kaikobad, whose details could not be learnt immediately, is scheduled to be sent to Singapore on a special flight.
“We have decided and taken steps to send him to Singapore for better treatment,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told members of Peshajibi Samunnay Parishad during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) around Tuesday noon.
The PMO will bear his treatment cost, estimated to be around Tk 1.40 crore, sources at the PMO told The Daily Star.
Azaz may be sent to Singapore Tuesday evening or Wednesday.
Trapped inside the ruins following the collapse of nine-storey Rana Plaza, Shaheena had been provided with saline and oxygen Since Saturday through a tunnel but rescuers could not pull her out as her body could not slip through the tiny space.
The rescue team immediately had to retreat, leaving Shaheena behind as a fire broke out Sunday afternoon from the sparks that originated from rod-cutting. Rescuer Azaz sustained injuries in the fire.
