1220 owners, drivers sued
At least 1,220 owners of vehicles and drivers were sued and 426 vehicles, including motorbikes and CNG-run auto-rickshaws, were seized in the district during the special traffic week.
The traffic has been extended till Tuesday.
On average, around 2,000 cases are lodged in a month in the district during normal time, said an official at the traffic office.
Traffic police examined documents of vehicles and drivers at Old Bus Stand, Nirala Intersection, Shaheed Smriti Poura Udyan Intersection and Main Road in the town.
Cases were filed against owners of vehicles for not having fitness certificates and against motorbike owners for not having registration numbers while drivers were fined for not having driving license, said Tangail Traffic Inspector (Administration) Md Eshrajul Haque.
Awareness has increased among the people, passengers and transport workers during the Special Traffic Week, he added. Police are presenting flowers to the owners whose papers are in order, he said.
The number of vehicle owners as well as drivers increased at the office of Bangladesh Road Transport Authorities, while motorcyclists are buying helmets.
