US wants freedom of speech, fair polls
The US wants freedom of speech and free, fair and credible election for stronger democracy in Bangladesh, said Marcia Bernicat, outgoing US ambassador in Bangladesh, yesterday.
“As a diplomat our job is not to comment on political situation. That is the job of the citizens of the country,” Bernicat said while she was addressing businessmen at the farewell luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) at Westin hotel in Dhaka.
“We at the US embassy speak about the overarching principles of the freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of the press and ability to participate in free, fair and credible and inclusive election.”
“Those are the things we are advocating for. Again because we recognise the values in our own society and we know Bangladesh will value to their society,” she said.
“We have worked tirelessly as your partner. I have worked tirelessly to be a partner of this country because a strong and stable and democratic and prosperous Bangladesh does not just help Bangladeshis. It makes the world the better place,” she added.
She said she was proud to represent this country.
