Hold Ducsu polls before national election: Students tells DU authorities
A group of leaders and activists of left-leaning student organisations yesterday urged the university authorities to to hold Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) polls before the the upcoming National election.
The move is necessary to restore a democratic atmosphere in student politics, they said at a rally held at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus.
General students also participated in the programme.
Speakers said the university administration has consciously curtailed students' right by not holding Ducsu elections.
They are conducting senate sessions without students' representatives ignoring the 'Dhaka University Order - 1973'.
However, every year elections are being held for teachers' associations, and registered graduates.
"All communities can express their views at Ducsu. We have been deprived of Ducsu for the last three and half years," said Sami Abdullah, joint convener of Revolutionary Student Unity of Dhaka University Unit.
"We had seen a little change after Ducsu polls on the campus. Political atmosphere of co-existence had returned to the campus after a long time. But that situation is gone as Ducsu body remains inactive," said Sajid Ul Islam, student department of Oriental Art.
After 28 years, Ducsu's latest polls were held on March 11, 2019. The tenure of that committee ended on June 23 last year. However, the next election is yet to be held.
