'Torture of BCL leaders': Chhatra Dal condemns assault
The Dhaka University Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has condemned the attack on two Chhatra League leaders by Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun-or-Rashid of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
A statement, signed by the pro-BNP student organisation's Office Secretary Mahmudul Hasan said Chhatra League, the pro-Awami League student body, has been controlling university campuses with the help of police for 15 years.
"Now that police have assaulted a Chhatra League leader, we have yet to see any protest by the organisation. This means Chhatra League has turned into an organisation that has lost its ideology and ethics," reads the statement.
"Chhatra League's failure to protest the mistreatment of its central leaders by a police officer tarnishes the legacy of student politics."
Khorshed Alam Sohel, president of the JCD at Dhaka University, and Ariful Islam, general secretary, expressed their profound disappointment and condemn the erosion of the Chhatra League's principles, the statement further reads.
Harun-or-Rashid, the additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Division of DMP, became the talk of the town for allegedly assaulting two central Chhatra League leaders inside the Shahbagh Police Station last night.
Today, he has been transferred to the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
JCD said that earlier when students protested against police action for torturing a student, a group of BCL leaders carried out an attack on the demonstration.
They demanded justice for all kinds of police action on students that took place on the campus earlier under ADC Harun's orders.
