Over 500 BNP men sued in Pabna
More than 500 leaders and activists of the BNP have been sued in six cases filed with different police stations in Pabna on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All the cases were filed in connection with the explosion of crude bombs and violence.
Contacted, party leaders said the cases were false and filed to harass them ahead of the party's divisional rally in Rahshahi on December 3.
Police, however, claimed to have seized multiple unexploded crude bombs from different spots.
Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Atghoria Police Station, said Jahidul Islam Mukul, joint convener of the Atghoria municipality unit Awami League, sued 50 BNP men, including 10 named, yesterday.
According to the case statement, some AL men were playing football in Karaitala area on Tuesday night. The BNP men hurled crude bombs at them, creating violence in the area.
The OC said they found a crude bomb at the site.
Meanwhile, Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chatmohar Police Station, said a group of BNP activists were holding a secret meeting at a commercial establishment of Hasadul Islam Hera, former secretary of the party, on Tuesday night.
As police raided the spot, they hurled crude bombs at the law enforcers, he added.
Police filed a case against Hera and five other named accused in this connection. Ninety other unnamed were also sued in the case, the OC added.
Rashedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bhangura Police Station, said Abdul Zabbar, member of the upazla unit AL, filed a case against 60 to 70 BNP men for exploding crude bombs in Bhangura Bus Stand area on Tuesday night.
The accused include Rafikul Islam, convener of the upazila unit BNP, and Shahidul Islam, joint convener of the BNP unit.
Police seized four crude bombs from the spot, he added.
Arbinda Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said the BNP men were holding a meeting in Alhaj Textile Mills area on Tuesday night. As police raided the spot, they hurled crude bombs at the law enforcers.
Shitol, sub-inspector of the police station, filed a case against 150 to 160 BNP men, including Azmal Hossain, secretary of the upazila unit BNP, and nine other named accused.
OC of Sujanagar Police Station Abdul Hannan said two rival groups of the BNP locked in a clash and multiple crude bombs were exploded in Bhabanipur area.
Jahangir, sub-inspector of the police station, filed a case against 50 to 60 BNP men, including former chairman Abdur Rouf and six other BNP leaders, with the police station, the OC added.
Police are trying to nab the culprits, he further said.
Members of Ataikula Police Station also filed a case accusing 70 BNP men on Wednesday night.
Hafizur Rahman, OC of the police station, said Sub-inspector Shohidul Islam filed a case accusing 70 BNP men, including six named ones, with the police station over violence.
Advocate Masud Khandakar, secretary of Pabna district unit BNP, told The Daily Star that all these cases were false.
"When the BNP men are taking preparation to organise a mass gathering in the upcoming rally in Rajshahi on December 3, such false cases are being filed for harassing them so that they don't join the BNP rally," Masud said.
