BCL leader held over abduction, extortion
A Chhatra League (BCL) leader and four of his associates were arrested on Sunday on charges of extortion and abduction in Pabna's Santhia upazila.
They were sent to jail yesterday, after being produced before court.
Earlier, police rescued Helal Uddin, the abducted man, from Santhia municipality mayor's personal office on Sunday afternoon, after a call was made to 999.
Hasibul Khan Sana, secretary of Santhia upazila BCL; Mehedi Hasan Rubel, former joint secretary of upazila BCL; Shondip Kumar of Konabari village; and Yeasin Ali and Milon Hossain of Chor Bhodrokola village were sent to jail.
Officer-in-Charge of Santhia Police Station Asif Mohammad Siddikul Islam said the arrestees abducted Helal from Chor Bhodrokola on Sunday afternoon and kept him in the mayor's office. They demanded Tk 15 lakh from the victim.
A relative of Helal called 999, and police rescued him.
The victim later filed a case, and police arrested them from different areas, the OC said.
Talking with the Daily Star, Santhia municipality mayor Mahabubul Alom Bachchu claimed that he did not know anything about the incident.
In 2020, Hasibul Khan Sana was arrested over extortion.
