20 including journalist injured as police charge batons on LDA procession in Gaibandha
At least 20 leaders and activists of Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) were injured when police charged batons on them at their procession brought this evening at Gaibandha in support of their tomorrow's hartal called for the price hikes of daily essentials.
Ataul Gani Sagor, cameraperson of Somoy TV, was also injured in the police attack, reports our Bogura correspondent quoting Advocate Murad Zaman Rabbani, assistant general secretary of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Gaibandha.
Besides, police picked up three leaders of LDA from the procession, he said.
They are Nilufar Yasmin, central general secretary of Nari Mukti, Ranu Sarkar, general secretary of Jubo Union Gaibandha district unit and Wares Sarkar, president of Gaibandha district unit Chhatra Union.
Police barred the procession when it reached Gate No-1 of the city at around 7:00pm and later charged batons at Assaduzzaman Market and Kacharibazar area -- leaving 20 people injured, he said.
The conditions of two activists are critical, informed the CPB leader Murad.
Denying the allegation of charging batons, Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star that they asked them not to bring out candlelight procession.
"We took three persons to the police station for questioning," he added.
Mentionable, LDA on March 11 called a half day hartal on March 28 across the country demanding for an end to hike the prices of gas, electricity, and water.
