US envoy meets DMP chief
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas held a meeting with Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq at DMP headquarters yesterday. The meeting was held between 11:00am and 12:30pm.
"Ambassador Haas met with the police commissioner and appreciated the chance to discuss pre-election security environment and importance of respecting human rights in policing," US Embassy Spokesperson Bryan Schiller told The Daily Star.
However, he did not further elaborate on the matter.
DMP spokesperson Faruk Hossain said Peter Haas sought to know about the recent operation against militants in Moulvibazar and subsequent arrests. He also asked if there is a fresh surge of militancy in Bangladesh.
Their discussion also covered the topic of overall security and the situation of law and order in Dhaka, alongside other issues.
The officials expressed hope that the friendship and mutual cooperation between the two countries will increase in the future, added Faruk.
Another official who attended the meeting said the US ambassador also sought to know about the security arrangements for US citizens in Bangladesh.
The US Ambassador was accompanied by embassy officials, including Human Rights Officer Sophia Meulenberg.
On the other side, DMP's Additional Commissioner (crime and operations) Khandaker Mahid Uddin, Additional Commissioner (CTTC) Asaduzzaman and Additional Commissioner (detective branch) Harun Or Rashid were attended the meeting.
