Shifting NID services: EC to write to president to express its concern
The Election Commission will send to a letter to President Abdul Hamid communicating its officials concern over the shifting of all NID services from the commission to the home ministry.
"We will send a letter to the president informing him about Bangladesh Election Commission Officers Association's memorandum submitted to us over the shifting of NID services from the EC to home ministry," said Election Commissioner Md Alamgir.
While talking to reporters at his office, the election commissioner further said the EC would send the letter for consideration of the president, who is the guardian of the commission as well as the government.
In October, the cabinet approved in principle the draft of the National Identity Registration Act-2022, aiming to give the job of issuing national identity (NID) cards to the home ministry.
In May 2021, The Prime Minister's Office instructed the cabinet division to take necessary steps in this regard.
Since then, Bangladesh Election Commission Officers Association has been expressing concern about the issue and also demanding to keep NID services under the EC.
The association said it is logical that NID services are provided by the EC as the NID card is being prepared by taking inputs from the database of voter list. Preparing the voter list and NID cards are integrally related, which also saves public money, it added.
