Police detain several BNP men from ‘Mayer Dak’ organiser’s house
Police detained several BNP men from a "Doa Mahfil" programme held at the house of BNP leader Sajedul Islam Sumon, a victim of enforced disappearance in 2013, in Dhaka's Shaheenbagh area.
The BNP men gathered there to attend the programme held by the family after Sumon's mother Hazera Khatun returned home form hospital, BNP leaders and Sumon's family members said.
Sumon's mother is the key organiser of "Mayer Dak", a platform that holds programmes on different occasions every year, demanding return of the victims of enforced disappearance.
"Police suddenly besieged our house when the Doa Mahfil was going on. At least 20 persons were picked up from the house," Sumon's sister Sanjida Islam Tuli told The Daily Star.
BNP North City unit Convenor Amanullah Aman and Member Secretary Aminul Haque were present at the house during the incident.
Md Shohidullah, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division Police, said they picked up several persons from the house.
"Some of them are accused in different cases. Besides, we have information that they were planning subversive activities," he said.
"Legal action against them is underway," he said.
