Mayor Hanif’s death anniversary today
Today is the 16th death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation and president of Dhaka city Awami League.
Following the death anniversary, President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury recalled his memories and contributions to the nation and AL in separate messages.
In 2006, on this day, Hanif passed away at a city hospital due to a prolonged illness and multiple organ failures.
Born in Dhaka on April 1, 1944, he joined student politics in his early life. He also played a significant role in different democratic movements. Hanif was elected an MP from Dhaka-12 constituency in 1973 and served as whip of the national parliament.
Hanif, was also a close aide to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had a long list of contributions to different democratic movements throughout his life, said a press release of Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation.
Hanif served as the DCC mayor for eight years between March 12, 1994 and April 4, 2002. His son Sayeed Khokon is a former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
