Leopard dies after being electrocuted
A leopard was killed after being electrocuted while trying to enter a poultry farm in a village in Nilphamari Sadar upazila on early Friday.According to the Mahbub George, chairperson of the union, the cheetah was trying to steal chicken from a poultry farm owned by one Aliar Rahman. It was accompanied by another leopard, which was hiding in a nearby maize field.
Sadar upazila forest officer Jesmin Nahar speculated that the leopard might have come to Bangladesh from jungles in India by crossing the border.
The leopard died instantly as it came in contact with a live metal wire fencing around the farm.
The farm owner said he had put up the fencing a few days ago as his chicken kept getting stolen by unknown animals. He transmitted electricity into the wire from late night till the morning.
After one of the leopards died, the surviving one let out a roar and ran into the nearby vast maize field.
Meanwhile, following the feline's death, enthusiastic villagers, particularly the younger ones, displayed the body by hanging it in an open space with bamboo poles. A large number of people from neighbouring villages visited the spot to catch a glimpse of the dead animal.
Locals said they have thoroughly searched for the second leopard in the maize field but failed to find a trace.
This has lead to an environment of panic prevailing around the area in fear of attacks from the animal. Local forest officials took the dead leopard in their custody and are preparing for an autopsy.
Photos of the dead leopard hung on the bamboo pole was also making rounds across social media yesterday.
