Gunshots heard along Myanmar border in Bandarban after a month
After a month's pause, locals at Bahirmath Ward-8 under Dochari union of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban claimed that they heard gunshots last night (October 21, 2022).
"When I went to the Bahirmath area today (October 22, 2022), the locals informed me that they have been hearing heavy firing in the border area since last night. And I also heard gunshots from my office," Dochari Union Parishad Chairman Md Imran told our Bandarban correspondent.
After the sound of gunshots, the local administration started miking in the area to make locals cautious and requested the local mosques to do so, he added.
After a break for some time, the firing started again on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border at 1:00 pm today and a bullet landed in between Lemuchhari and Bahirmath areas at around 1pm putting locals in panic, the UP chairman said quoting locals.
Some locals said they have been hearing the sound of mortar shells since noon.
Even though there were no casualties, residents of the border area are fleeing for fear of being hurt.
Nurul Absar, chairman of Naikhongchhari Sadar Union said, "We have heard the sound of heavy shelling inside Myanmar on the border of Bhalluk Khaia and Lemuchhari areas."
Tontu Shah, officer-in-charge of Naikhongchhari Police Station said he has yet to get the news of firing at the border.
"We are looking into the matter," he added.
Meanwhile, Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Salma Ferdous told The Daily Star, "If the situation worsens, we will make arrangements to bring the locals living in the border areas to a safer place or shelter camps as per the prior instructions of our Deputy Commissioner."
