Day of celebration marred by violence
Programmes celebrating the country's Independence Day yesterday, were marred by violence in different districts.
In Chattogram, Mahanagar Swechchhasebak League allegedly launched an attack on Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad at the Shaheed Minar on the Municipal High School ground yesterday morning.
Abdullah Al Mamun, general secretary of Chattogram city Swechchhasebak League, said they did not attack Chhatra Odhikar Parishad. "Rather, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad men were chanting provocative slogans in the area."
Amir Hossain, president of Chattogram city Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, said at least seven of their activists were injured in an attack.
However, Nezam Uddin, officer in charge of Kotwali Police Station, said there was no such incident in the area.
Meanwhile, two BCL activists were injured during a factional clash yesterday morning at the Govt Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College campus in the port city.
Followers of Kazi Nayeem, convener of the college's BCL unit, and those of its convener Maymun Uddin, were chanting slogans against each other and engaged in a clash, said eye-witnesses.
Police brought the situation under control, said Ferdous Jahan, OC of Chawkbazar Police Station.
In Laxmipur's Ramgati upazila, a clash between AL and BNP left 15 injured.
BNP men attacked AL activists after paying tribute at the Alexander Bazar memorial in the morning, said Alamgir Hossain, OC of Ramgati Police Station.
However, Ashraf Uddin Nizam, president of Ramgati upazila BNP, said AL men attacked them when they were returning from the memorial.
In Manikganj's Singair upazila, BCL activists allegedly attacked BNP's Independence Day procession in front of their office and left fifty people injured.
In Saturia upazila, AL men were injured in an intra-party clash over placing wreaths at a memorial.
In Netrokona's Kalmakanda upazila, at least 20 Chhatra Dal activists were injured in an attack allegedly by Juba and Chhatra League activists.
