ASI who framed trader possessed yaba
A police probe has found that an assistant sub-inspector, who arrested a trader for possession of yaba in September, illegally possessed 100 yaba pills.
Mahbub Alam, an assistant sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station, and informants Mohammad Rubel and Sohel Rana framed trader Mohammad Khalil with possession of yaba near the capital's Cantonment Railway Station on September 6.
The following day, Khalid Hasan Tonmoy, a sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station, filed the case against Mahbub and two informants with Cantonment Police Station after footage of the trio framing Khalil went viral on social media.
They were arrested the same day, and are now out on bail.
On Monday, the case's Investigation Officer Anowar Hossain, also a sub-inspector of Cantonment Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka saying that the three accused illegally carried the yaba.
Both informants were charged in another narcotics case filed with Pallabi Police Station in December last year, said the charge sheet.
The victim, Khalil, could not be contacted for the investigation, it also said.
The investigator said ASI Mahbub provided false information to Sub-Inspector Kamrul Islam and fabricated the incident of recovering yaba from Khalil to establish the seizure list, based on which SI Kamrul filed a case against Khalil over possession of 100 yaba pills.
The footage of a private TV channel showed ASI Mahbub, in plainclothes, stopping Khalil and scuffling with him near Cantonment Railway Station.
Mahbub took a packet of yaba pills from Rubel and put it into Khalil's pocket. He then claimed to have caught Khalil with yaba pills.
Khalil was sent to jail on September 7 and later in the month, cleared from charges after police found him innocent during the investigation.
