Rangpur City polls: JP mayoral candidate ahead in 200 centres
Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, the Jataya Party-backed mayoral candidate in the Rangpur City Corporation elections, is leading in 200 centres as the vote-counting began at 6:00 pm today.
In the evening, the counting began at the Rangpur Shilpakala Academy after the voting ended, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
Till 11:00pm, Mostafizar with plough symbol bagged 1,26,184 votes in 200 polling centres while his nearest Bangladesh Islami Andolon candidate Amiruzzaman Pial got 43,689 votes.
On the other hand, independent mayoral candidate Latifur Rahman Milan bagged 29,580 votes while Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Advocate Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia got 20,045 votes.
There are 426,470 voters in the Rangpur City Corporation elections.
A total of nine candidates are vying for the mayoral post, 183 for councillor posts and 68 for the post of reserved seats for women councillors.
The election was held through Electronic Voting Machines at 229 centres under 33 wards.
