Law enforcers will have to take responsibility in case of polls-time communal violence: CEC
Law enforcement agencies will have to bear the responsibility if there is any communal violence before, during or after the upcoming national election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said today.
The Election Commission has some control over law enforcement up to 15 days after the election, he told reporters after a meeting with Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad at the EC office in the capital's Agargaon.
"We'll keep an eye on that. It is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to maintain communal harmony in the country, whether pre-election or post-election. If that doesn't happen, they will bear the responsibility," he said.
A delegation led by the parishad's General Secretary Rana Dasgupta went to the EC office to submit a memorandum containing their demands to prevent violence centring the polls.
According to Habibul, the parishad said in the meeting that there was communal violence in the past due to elections. They still fear that such communal clashes and violence may occur in the future.
"We have taken this into consideration ... We take the issue very seriously. We have also said that law enforcement will look into the matter," Habibul Awal said.
"We will inform the government, the deputy commissioner, superintendents of police, home ministry, so that no communal violence takes place," he added.
