EU seeks Bangladesh’s support against Russia in ICAO elections
European Union and like-minded countries sought Bangladesh's support against Russia in the upcoming elections of the International Civil Aviation Organisation Elections during September 27-October 7.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley and five other European ambassadors made the communication to Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen at the foreign ministry yesterday (September 12, 2022).
"We expressed our position and sought Bangladesh's support. It's up to Bangladesh what it does," an ambassador told The Daily Star.
ICAO has already condemned Russia's violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a United Nations Member State, including its airspace, as being inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and Article 1 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).
The Council also expressed grave concerns on the latest developments in Ukraine, and solidarity with its people, in direct alignment with the sentiments expressed by the UN Secretary General in his statements to the UN General Assembly on February 23-24, this year.
During the meeting, the diplomats also said it is because of Russia's invasion that caused the economic and commodities supplies challenges.
A foreign ministry official told this correspondent that Bangladesh expressed concerns over high fuel and food prices in the global market.
