Woman in Dhaka's Wari arrested for torturing teenage domestic help
A case was filed today against a woman over torturing her domestic help in Dhaka's Wari area.
Police arrested the woman – Akhi, wife of Masum Billah and resident of Wari's Taherbagh – after mother of the victim, Swapna Akhter (13), filed the case this morning.
Akhi and Masum were both made accused in the case, police said.
The girl was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for check-up around noon and after primary treatment there, she was taken to Wari Police Station, Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain Hawlader told The Daily Star.
According to the case statement, Akhi used to torture Swapna because she apparently did not work "fast enough". Akhi also beat her with a wooden stick. Even when Swapna would be tired and would go to bed, Akhi would abuse her, as per the case statement.
Swapna's relative Asma Akhter told The Daily Star the girl has been staying in Akhi's house for last 10 months. Her parents came to Dhaka 10 months ago from Rangpur and kept her at Asma's house. Later Swapna, through another woman, was taken to Akhi's house, Asma said.
