“Take steps to stop circulation of CU student’s sexual assault video”
A Chattogram court this evening (September 14, 2022) ordered police to take necessary measures so that the sexual assault video of a female student of Chittagong University (CU) is not circulated on social media.
Chattogram District and Sessions Court Judge Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan passed the order during the bail hearing of an accused in the case filed with Hathazari police station, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent citing Public Prosecutor Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury.
The court ordered the investigation officer (IO) of the case to take necessary steps in this regard.
The accused, Nur Hossain Shawon, a Chhatra League activist, appealed for bail before the court on September 5 but the court had fixed today for bail hearing, asking the CU proctor to appear before the court.
During the bail hearing, PP Saimul Chowdhury told the court, "The accused sexually abused the victim and filmed the incident. We fear that the social and personal life of the victim will be severely affected if the video is being circulated by any chance."
The judge at that time asked the IO of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman, to take necessary steps in this regard so that the video cannot be circulated. If needed, the court also asked to take help of other agencies, said court sources.
PP advocate Iftekhar Saimul told the journalists that "After hearing, the court directed the plaintiff to make an appeal to the court to add the sections of Cybercrime alongside Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in the case."
Nur Hossain Shawon, a student of Hathazari College, was expelled from the college by National University (NU) following his alleged involvement in the case.
On July 17, a female student was physically assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of CU campus with her friend around 10pm.
The youths also filmed the incident on their phones and threatened to make the video viral. Later, they fled with the mobile phones and wallets of the two students.
A five-member body was initially formed to investigate the assault after the female student's written complaint to the proctor.
A case was also filed under the Women and Children Repression Act against them later.
On July 23 Rab arrested the five including two CU students in this connection and recovered the mobile phones of the victim from their possession.
Rab said the arrestees told the law enforcers that they were involved with the politics of BCL at CU.
Campus sources said the five accused are BCL men under the wing of CU BCL president Rezaul Haque Rubel.
Arrested Azim Hossain, 23, and Nurul Absar Babu, 22, are students of Chittagong University, while Masud Rana, 22 and Nur Hossain Shawon, 22, are students of Hathazari College, and Saiful Islam, 23, is a college dropout, said Rab.
After the arrest CU authority expelled the two BCL men from the university.
