‘Mohibullah targeted due to his popularity among Rohingyas’
Terming Rohingya leader Mohibullah's murder as "well-planned", investigators have said his popularity in the Rohingya refugee community in Cox's Bazar is the motive behind the grisly murder.
"Mohibullah knew the killers; hence, they could easily enter his office and gun him down. There was no sign of scuffle in front of his office and a guard was stationed there," said Armed Police Battalion-14 Commanding Officer Md Naimul Huq, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
"The murder was executed in a well-planned manner as the killers followed Mohibullah's every move," said the APBn official.
"A tense situation is prevailing in the Kutupalong Rohingya camp and around 300 additional APBn men have been deployed to avert further violence," added the official.
Mohibullah was popular for his strong stance on peaceful repatriation to Myanmar from Bangladesh. It was under his leadership, that the Rohingya community had drawn the international communities' attention against the torture and persecution by the Myanmar security forces on them, said the investigators.
"Those who are trying to take over the Rohingya leadership in the community might have plotted the murder. As Mohibullah had global acceptance, the alternative Rohingya force, which had an ideological rift with him, may have plotted the assassination for supremacy," Naimul told The Daily Star.
"We have been working over several angles behind the murder including intra-party feud," he also said.
KILLERS HAD MASKS ON, USED AUTOMATIC WEAPONS
Quoting witnesses, police have said the killers had masks on their faces, and they entered Mohibullah's office and fired shots targeting him.
"We have found several fired bullets and sent those for forensic examination," said the APBn CO Naimul.
"The criminals used automatic weapons," said an inspector of Cox's Bazar district police wishing to be anonymous.
"The Rohingya community, as well as the local administration, knows very well which criminal groups in the camp have such firearms," he told this newspaper.
However, Mohibullah's younger brother Habib Ullah told journalists that around 20 men went to the office with firearms, shot his brother dead and left the spot.
AUTOPSY COMPLETED, CASE TO BE FILED
Mohibullah's autopsy was performed at Cox's Bazar Medical College Hospital around 12:00 pm today. His wife Nasima Begum will file a case over the incident, said police.
Unidentified criminals shot Mohibullah dead at his Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) Camp-1 east office around 8:30 pm last night.
Mohibullah was the chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace & Human Rights (ARSPH) and played a vital role in the Rohingya repatriation process, according to police.
