Mob beats man to death alleging theft in Pabna
A man was beaten to death by a mob over theft allegations at Majhdiar area under Ishwardi upazila of Pabna today (May 22, 2022).
The victim, Rabbi Hossain Chonchol (25), son of Jahidul Islam of Majhdiar village in Sara union in the upazila, was accused in four cases including drug peddling and theft, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting police.
Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said Chonchol went to Sohan Store in Majhdiar area on early Sunday. Seeing him there, the shopkeeper along with the villagers started beating him alleging that he stole from the shop.
After the mob beating, the victim was taken to Sara UP Chairman's Office in critical condition in the morning and the chairman later sent him to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex.
The victim got released from the hospital in the afternoon and died on the way to his home at 2pm, said police.
Talking with the Daily Star, Emdadul Haque Rana, chairman of Sara Union Parishad said when villagers took the victim to him, he asked them to admit him at the hospital.
"Nobody can take the law in their hand. If the victim was guilty, he should be handed over to police," the chairman told the villagers.
Police visited the spot and they sent the body to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC, adding a filing of a case in this regard is underway.
