Man killed on the day of his return home after 15 years
A man who had just returned from Oman was allegedly killed by his relatives at his younger sister's in-laws' house in Chattogram's Mirsarai upazila on Friday night.
The incident occurred just hours after he returned home from Oman after 15 years, police said.
The victim, Mohammad Mohiuddin, 45, was the son of the late Fazlul Hoque of Nandigram village under Ichhakhali union in the upazila.
"He was allegedly beaten by members of his younger sister Selina Akhter's in-laws, including her husband Md Sharif, over a family feud," the OC said, adding that the accused fled after the incident.
According to family members, after Mohiuddin returned home around 11:00am on Friday, his brother-in-law Sharif insisted over the phone that he visit their home. Later, around 9:00pm, Mohiuddin went to his sister Selina's in-laws' house, accompanied by a cousin, another brother-in-law, and a nephew.
Md Sohag, the cousin who accompanied him, told The Daily Star that when they arrived, they saw a crowd outside the house and found Selina crying.
"She was sitting in the yard with injuries on her leg," Sohag said.
He added that Sharif had been torturing Selina for the past four years, demanding money. Among her four siblings, Mohiuddin was the one who cared for her the most. Over time, he had given Sharif around Tk 15 lakh in phases to help him start a business, Sohag said.
When Mohiuddin requested his sister's in-laws to let Selina leave with them, her husband, parents, sister, and about four other youths attacked him, beating and kicking him, Sohag alleged.
"They also punched me and our other brother-in-law while chasing our nephew with lethal weapons," he said.
Mohiuddin, critically injured, was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Sabbir Mohammad Selim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jorarganj Police Station, said police recovered Mohiuddin's body at the upazila health complex.
"There were no visible injury marks on his body," he added.
