Gazipur Mayor Zahangir Alam faces contempt of court

The High Court today issued a contempt of court rule against Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Md Zahangir Alam and three others on charges of grabbing land, ignoring its directives.
In the rule, the HC asked them to explain in a week why contempt of court proceedings should not be brought against them for violating its orders.
The bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman issued the rule following a contempt of court petition filed by one Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, a resident of Gulshan in Dhaka.
Three other people, against whom the contempt of court rule was issued, are Alfaz from Painshal village under Joydebpur Police Station in Gazipur, Harunor Rashid alias Thandu of Poschim Dogori village, and Fazlul Huq of BK Bari village under the jurisdiction of the same police station.
Following a writ petition, the HC on October 8, 2018 asked the respondents including Zahangir Alam to be restrained from entering the land of the petitioner in BK Bari Mouza under of Gazipur and not disturb the peaceful possession of the petitioner for three months.
Later on, the HC directive was extended. On June 21, this year, the HC asked the same.
Despite the HC orders, the respondents including Zahangir Alam, recently suspended Awami League leader, allegedly prevented Ashraf Uddin from entering the land. Being helpless Ashraf filed a case on August 18 this year with the Joydebpur Police Station.
Even then, the accused including Mayor Zahangir Alam were threatening Ashraf Uddin.
In this situation, Ashraf Uddin recently filed the contempt of court petition with the HC against them, petitioner's counsel Abul Kalam Azad told reporters.
