Ex-husband threw acid on garment worker in Manikganj, family claims
Face and both hands of a nineteen-year-old garment factory worker were burned by acid, in Saturia upazila of Manikganj, early today.
A case was filed in this regard at Saturia Police Station, reports our local correspondent.
According to the case statement, the young woman was sleeping in her room when acid was thrown at her through a broken window around midnight.
Her family took her to Manikganj District Hospital in critical condition and she was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit at 12pm today.
Her mother and sister -- who slept beside her -- were also slightly burned, but they out of danger now, said Dr Arshad Ullah, superintendent of the 250-bed district hospital, adding that the victim's condition was critical and she was transferred to Dhaka for better treatment. Acid burned her face, including the trachea, and both hands, he added.
According to the victim's family, she married a man in Manikganj Sadar upazila two years ago. Her husband used to torture her for dowry and he was a drug addict, so she divorced him, family said. However, as she did not agree to remarry him, he threatened to kill her. He threw acid on her, victim's family said.
Vicim's elder brother claimed that after divorce, his sister had been working in a garment factory for three months. Her ex-husband followed her around the neighbourhood and on her way to and from work.
Officer-in-Charge of Saturia Police Station, Ashraful Alam, said that following the allegations, police were sent to the location.
He added that legal action would be taken after a thorough investigation.
