DGFI officer killed as narcos open fire: ISPR

A DGFI officer was killed and at least a Rab member was injured as drug smugglers opened fire during a clash near Tumbru border in Bandarban's Naikkhangchhari yesterday, said an ISPR press release.

The incident happened when Rab and DGFI were jointly conducting an anti-narcotic drive, the release of the Inter-Services Public Relations added.

The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) member was from Bangladesh Air Force.

The ISPR press release did not name the officer killed in action.

Tontu Saha, officer-in-charge of Naikkhangchhari Police Station, said the incident took place near the Rohingya camp along the zero point in the evening.

Quoting an official of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, our correspondent reports that a Rab member was brought to the hospital around 9:45pm.

Injured Sohel Barua, 30, was under Rab-15 Battalion in Cox's Bazar, said sources at the hospital's emergency ward.

"Sohel had serious head injuries," said Mohammad Ashikur Rahman, resident medical officer at the hospital.

Major Arefin, company commander of Bandarban Rab, told The Daily Star that a team of Rab-15 Battalion took part in the drive.
