DB files appeal with court to show 2 arrested in Tipu murder
Detective Branch of police today (August 23, 2022) filed an application with the court to show two suspects arrested in connection with the murders of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Afran Jamal Prity in Dhaka's Shahjahanpur on March 24.
The arrestees are Shamim, alias Molla Shamim, and Tawfique Hasan, alias Babu.
Md Yasin Sikder, an inspector of Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the application with a Dhaka court.
Police were searching to arrest them based on information given by some accused in the double murder during their remand period.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib fixed tomorrow (August 24, 2022) for hearing on the petition in their presence.
In the application, the IO said Shamim was arrested from Jashore's Benapole on August 15 while Tawfique was arrested from Dhaka the same day.
Shamim was staying in Benapole and waiting to cross the border, Yasin Sikder said.
Detectives then recovered two pistols, eight bullets and a motorcycle, which they claim were used in the double murder, from south Goran area.
Following the seizure, they were placed on a three-day remand each in an arms case filed with Khilgaon Police Station.
After interrogation on remand, it was found that Shamim was directly involved in the double murder but remained out of touch, and Tawfique was also involved, Yasin Sikder added.
The IO also submitted five-day remand prayer for quizzing them about the murder incident.
With them, police have so far arrested 25 in connection with the killings.
Earlier three arrestees, including Sumon Shikder alias Musa, confessed to the killings.
On March 24 this year, Tipu (55), former general secretary of AL's Motijheel unit, was returning home in his microbus from his restaurant in Motijheel AGB Colony area. The vehicle was at a traffic light in Shahjahanpur when attackers arrived at the scene on a motorcycle and opened fire indiscriminately.
A college student, Samia Afran Jamal Prity (22), who happened to be in a rickshaw next to the vehicle, also got shot. The two were declared dead after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
