Central Hospital files lawsuit against Dr Sangjukta Saha
The Central Hospital authorities today filed a lawsuit against Dr Sangjukta Saha with a Dhaka court claiming Tk 500 crore as compensation over her defamatory remarks about the hospital.
Didarul Alam, secretary of Central Hospital, filed the suit with Dhaka's First Joint District Judge's Court.
After the hearing, Judge Md Masudul Haque accepted the lawsuit and summoned gynecologist Sangjukta, asking her to submit a written statement against the suit by July 25.
In the complaint, the plaintiff alleged that on June 20, Dr Sangjukta Saha said the authorities of Central Hospital were responsible for the deaths of Mahbuba Akter Akhi and her newborn.
During a press conference in the capital, she said the authorities did not take her consent verbally or in writing while admitting Mahbuba to the hospital on June 10.
The authorities also spoke "falsely" about her presence at the hospital, she claimed. "I was not in Bangladesh during Mahbuba's operation. How could I be responsible if I was not there? The responsibility is totally the hospital's.
"To cover up the real incident and hide their faults, the vested quarters are using all means and are always busy misleading people of the country with false information," she said.
Akhi was not her regular patient, she had claimed.
Following her press conference, the Central Hospital authorities on June 22 sent a legal notice to Sangjukta, seeking withdrawal of her statement blaming the hospital for the deaths of Akhi and her newborn.
Mohammad Mazharul Islam Sohel, a Supreme Court lawyer, sent the legal notice on behalf of Central Hospital.
The plaintiff also said Akhi was admitted to the hospital under Sangjukta, but the latter denied it saying that Akhi was not a regular patient which undermined the name, fame and image of the hospital.
Moreover, she did not withdraw her defamatory statements given against the hospital, said the plaintiff in his complaint.
Akhi died on June 18, eight days after the death of her newborn baby.
On June 14, her husband Yakub filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station, accusing the doctors concerned and the Central Hospital of botched C-section and fraud.
