Attempt to kill 2 Journalists: 3 brothers jailed for four months
A Dhaka court today sentenced three brothers to four months' simple imprisonment in a case filed over an attempt to kill two journalists of Jamuna Television in November 2016.
The convicts are Abdur Rahim, Abdul Jabbar and Md Zakir Hossain. They all are polythene traders by profession.
Soon after the verdict, the complainant expressed dissatisfaction and said they would challenge it with the higher court.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts.
After the judgment, the three convicts got bail on the grounds that they would file an appeal with the higher court.
The court also acquitted Md Ovi, Md Habibur Rahman and Shaon Howlader as the charges brought against them were not proved.
Earlier, the prosecution and defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 12 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
On November 6 of 2016, Jamuna TV's senior reporter Shakil Hasan and its cameraperson Shahin Alom came under attack by some miscreants while they were going to cover a report at Swarighat in Dhaka's Chawkbazar area.
The miscreants also poured kerosene in an attempt to burn them. But they were rescued by locals.
Following the incident, Shakil filed a case with Chawkbazar Police Station.
Police then arrested some people for their alleged involvement with the incident.
Inspector Moradul Islam of Chawkbazar Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, on June 6 of 2017 pressed charges against six people over the incident.
On January 4 of 2018, the court framed charges against six of them.
