'Assault on 2 BCL leaders': DMP chief promises fair probe
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner today assured the Chhatra League that there would be a fair investigation into the alleged assault and torture on two BCL leaders in a police station.
DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker informed reporters of the development after a meeting between DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq and BCL President Saddam Hossain at the DMP headquarters this afternoon.
A departmental probe committee has been formed following the incident, the official said, adding that the committee members also heard from the two BCL leaders.
During the meeting, there was no discussion about filing a case, he added.
Following the meeting, BCL President Saddam also briefed the journalists and said they have faith in the departmental investigation of the police.
He said the DMP commissioner assured them that the departmental inquiry will ensure maximum legal punishment.
When asked whether any case would be filed over the assault, Saddam said they have confidence in the DMP's departmental investigation.
"We had a meeting with the home minister yesterday," he also said.
On Saturday night, Harun-or-Rashid, the additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Division, and other police members took two BCL leaders to Shahbagh Police Station around 9:00pm where, according to BCL leaders, police tortured them for about an hour.
The injured BCL leaders are Central Organising Secretary and Dhaka University's Fazlul Haque Hall unit President Anwar Hossain Naeem, and Central Science Affairs Secretary and Shahidullah Hall unit General Secretary Sharif Ahmed Munim.
The government suspended Harun today.
