Arms case against DGHS driver Abdul Malek: 3 more witnesses give deposition
Three more prosecution witnesses today gave their depositions before a Dhaka tribunal in an arms case filed against Abdul Malek, a driver of the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS).
The witnesses are Criminal Investigation Department's Inspector Mizanur Rahman and its Assistant Sub-Inspector Mominul Islam and Police Inspector Shafi Ullah.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka recorded their statements in the case, while the defence cross-examined the three witnesses, Additional Public Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Pal told The Daily Star.
Among the three witnesses, Shafi Ullah is the recording officer in the case, while Mizanur Rahman is a ballistics expert.
Ten out of 13 prosecution witnesses gave their depositions in the case till today, the state lawyer said.
The judge also fixed August 29 for next hearing in the case.
During today's hearing, Malek, who is now behind bars, was produced before the tribunal.
On March 11 this year, the tribunal framed charges against the lone accused Malek in the case.
Investigation Officer Rubel Sheikh, also a Sub-inspector of Turag Police Station, on January 10 submitted the charge sheet against Malek to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
During a raid, a team of Rab on September 20 last year arrested Malek from Kamarpara area under Turag Police Station in Dhaka, along with a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, five rounds of bullets, Tk 1.5 lakh fake currency, a laptop and a mobile phone.
Malek also possessed more than Tk 100 crore in wealth, Rab claimed.
Rab primarily assumed that Malek accumulated wealth by maintaining good relations with high-ranking officials of DGHS.
Later, two cases -- one for possessing arms and the another for possessing fake currencies -- were filed against him with Turag Police Station.
Malek and his wife were also sued for amassing wealth illegally.
