4 Mogh Party men shot dead in Bandarban
Four members of Mogh Liberation Party, locally known as Mogh Party, were killed in Bandarban's Rowangchhari upazila today.
Ashok Kumar Paul, additional superintendent of police in Bandarban, confirmed the development to our Bandarban correspondent.
"The deceased were members of the Mogh Party. We are trying to know the details of the incident," said Ashok Kumar Paul.
"Around 11:00am, we came to know that four bullet-ridden bodies were found in the Gherao Mukh area. On information, police are on the way to recover the bodies," said the police official.
Jerin Akther, superintendent of Bandarban police, talking to this correspondent said, "Primarily we suspect that the deceased were the members of Mogh Liberation Party (MLP)."
"The situation of Bandarban was good when there were few groups but now the situation reached a bad stage when we found more groups here," she said.
Yesterday, a Mogh Party gang shot one Unu Mong Marma, a member of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) at Bukhyong Para of Rowangchhari upazila in the afternoon, said police and PCJSS members.
Later, Unu Mong was taken away by the criminals, said Md Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Rowangchhari Police Station.
"We don't know whether Unu Mong was alive or dead," said the OC.
However, PCJSS sources said Unu Mong died later.
"A group of armed criminals of the Mogh Party shot Unu Mong, an active member of PCJSS, when he went to his father-in-law's house of Rowangchhari upazila last noon," said a leader of PCJSS seeking anonymity.
Seeking anonymity, locals of the area said since the threats started coming from the reported goons of the Mogh Party, the villagers have been passing sleepless nights.
Unu Mong Marma (no relation), chairman of Taracha Union Parishad, said, "Locals heard gunshots last afternoon when Unu was picked up after he was shot by the criminals from Bukhyong para."
Villagers of the area are now in constant fear following the series of murders and abductions in the region, said locals.
Gautam Dewan, president of CHT Citizens Committee said, "We can see that the government is conducting operations against a few regional parties in hills, while they did not take any action against the armed groups which are under the umbrella of law enforcement agencies."
"If it continues like this, we are afraid that we will go back to the previous state, before the signing of the CHT Peace Accord," he said.
"Until the peace accord is implemented, the problems will get only worse and the situation will get out of our control," added Gautom.
