30 arrested over vandalising traffic police boxes, attack on policeman at Mirpur
Police have arrested 30 people in connection with the vandalism of traffic police boxes and attack on policeman at Mirpur, Dhaka on Friday morning (October 14, 2022).
Different teams of Mirpur police made the arrests in between Friday night to today (October 15, 2022).
Among them, Mirpur police arrested 13 people while Pallabi police arrested eight people. Besides, a team of detective branch of police arrested nine people from different areas in Mirpur.
At a press conference today, DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Mohammad Harun Or Rashid said that some unruly rickshaw-pullers vandalised the traffic police boxes and attacked the on-duty traffic police while complying with the order issued by the High Court to stop the operation of illegal battery-run rickshaws.
"They spread a rumour that the traffic police had beaten up a physically challenged rickshaw driver and created tension among the battery-run rickshaw drivers. Following that, illegal battery-run rickshaw owners, drivers and people associated with the business fuelled the incident," he said.
The DB official said that the attack was planned to target the police and to embarrass the government.
"Police morale cannot be broken by surprise attack. All responsible persons will be brought under the law," he added.
On Friday, drivers of battery-run rickshaws vandalised five traffic-police boxes in Mirpur and Pallabi, leaving a traffic constable injured.
The incident took place around 8:30am in front of Adarsha School in Mirpur-10, when traffic constable Mizanur Rahman stopped two battery-rickshaws, said Elias Hossain, assistant commissioner of Traffic Division (Pallabi Zone).
Enraged by this, 25 to 30 rickshaw drivers attacked Mizanur whose face was bruised in the attack.
Later, they unitedly attacked a few traffic police boxes -- including the ones at Mirpur-12, Kalshi and Sagufta areas. A police motorbike was also vandalised during the incident.
Two cases were filed with Mirpur and Pallabi Police Stations in this connection.
