135 Indian fishermen held, 8 trawlers seized in Bay of Bengal
A navy team detained 135 Indian fishermen along with eight fishing trawlers from Bay of Bengal for illegally entering Bangladesh waters.
The patrol team of Bangladesh Navy detained the Indian fishermen during two raids in the deep sea early hours of yesterday (June 28, 2022), our Bagerhat correspondent reports quoting SM Ashraful Alam, inspector (media cell) of Bagerhat police.
The Indian fishermen illegally entered Bangladesh waters and were fishing in the Bay of Bengal.
The navy arrested 68 fishermen in the first rain and 67 fishermen in the second raid, said the police official.
The estimated value of the seized fishing trawlers is Tk 3.80 crore, he said.
Mohammad Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mongla Police Station, said a case was filed with the police station for illegally entering Bangladesh waters and fishing after the navy handed over them to police.
Meanwhile, 68 fishermen were sent to jail by a Bagerhat court yesterday while preparations are underway to send another 67 Indian fishermen before Bagerhat Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, said the police official.
