An exceptional fair for fish farmers
Farmers at Kahalu upazila of Bogura were taught various new techniques in fish farming during a day-long fair on Wednesday.
Held at the Kahalu Upazila Parishad ground, the fair was organised by NGO World Fish with event partner June 5 Communications.
There were lessons on various types of fish farming, including almost extinct species. They were given pointers on how to make fish farming more profitable and use integrated farming methods.
The farmers who went to the fair commented that the knowledge they obtained there would go a long way in improving their farm and farming methods.
Farmer Mizanur Rahman, of Kahalu, said farmers learnt how to cultivate fish in a better way, get easy access to bank loans, and how to process fish for export.
Shakila Bejam, 31, of Shahjahanpur upazila, said the fair was helpful for everyone. "I hope to be able to make more profit by fish farming in my three-acre pond with the knowledge I have gained in this fair."
Prominent fish researcher Manas Kumar Saha said through such fairs, farmers will be able to know about the best farming methods and the people will know about nutrition and protein intake.
Through this fair, a fish farmer can get ideas about getting bank loans and marketing in a hassle-free manner.
Chairman of the upazila parishad Al Hasibul Hasan inaugurated the fair. Mahmuda Khatun Polly, senior upazila fisheries officer, was also present.
The fair was also attended by the Department of Fisheries, TMSS, BRAC, Bengal Meat Processing Industries Limited, Bank Asia, The Right Kind and Mega Feed.
Various organisations participated in the fair and presented their activities to the fish farmers regarding fish farming, food management, credit, and marketing.
