Six killed in 2 road accidents
Four people were killed and four others injured when a vegetable-laden truck rammed a CNG-run autorickshaw and then ploughed into a vegetable market in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila yesterday.
Three of the victims -- Siddik Mia, 55, Md Siddik, 62, and Abul Kalam, 40 -- died on the spot, said Nur Hossain, sub-inspector of Bhairab highway police.
The other dead, Abul Kalam, 55, died on the way to a hospital in Dhaka, and was later brought back to the upazila, said Monzur Elahi, chairman of Mirzapur union.
Police and locals said the truck was headed towards Kishoreganj's Bhairab from Dhaka.
While crossing Raipura's Mahmudabad area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, the truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving two of its passengers dead on the spot.
As the driver lost control of the vehicle, it ploughed through a vegetable market, leaving one vendor dead and five others injured.
On information, police and local fire service officials reached the spot and recovered the bodies of three people.
The five injured were sent to different hospitals and one of them died on the way, the SI said.
He added that police seized the truck but its driver fled.
The accident prompted Azgar Ali, upazila nirbahi officer, to shut down the Mahmudabad market since the area has proved to be accident prone.
On June 30, a covered van ploughed into the same market, killing five vendors, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, in Brahmanbaria's Bijoynagar upazila, two people were killed and 10 were injured in a pile-up involving a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, a truck and a microbus.
The accident took place on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, in Shoshoi area of the upazila yesterday morning, said Sukhendu Basu, officer-in-charge of Khantihata Highway police.
The dead were identified as Suman Goswani, 30, and Mohan Bonik, 31, both from Habiganj's Madhabpur upazila and passengers of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
The 10 injured were passengers of the microbus.
According to the OC, the truck, heading towards Sylhet, first hit the CNG-run auto-rickshaw from behind, leaving Suman and Mohan dead on the spot. Right at that moment, the microbus hit the truck from behind, leaving the 10 injured.
Locals rushed to rescue the injured and sent them to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.
The vehicles involved in the accident were seized but the drivers fled, the OC added.
