School run turns fatal for 7 year old
A seven-year-old died and another child was injured after a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit them on their way to school in Dhaka's East Jurain this morning.
The deceased was identified as Mehjabin Islam Bhuiyan Maria, a class two student of Jurain Ashraf Master High School.
The accident happened around 7:30 am in front of the school as the two children were crossing the road, Proloy Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Kadamtali Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Maria's father Julfikar Ali said Maria and her elder sister Naween were going to school with their grandmother from their home in Commissioner Road area.
Maria met her friend Faiza on the way and, holding hands, they were crossing the road when the speeding auto-rickshaw hit them, leaving them critically injured, he said.
They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Maria dead around 9am, said inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost.
Faiza (7), a student of a madras adjacent to the school, is being treated at the hospital. She is out of danger, hospital sources said.
Police seized the battery-run rickshaw and detained its driver Jony Matbar (30) from the scene.
