Metal object from Sitakunda blast kills man nearly 1km away
A man was killed after a metal object from the explosion at an oxygen plant hit him nearly a kilometre away at Kadamrusul Bazar in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila today.
Shamsul Alam, 65, was sitting in a makeshift stall in the market when the object struck him.
With Shamsul, the death toll has risen to six in this afternoon's explosion at the Shema Oxygen Oxico Ltd, a subsidiary of Sheema Automatic Re-Rolling Mills, next to the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
His daughter Bibi Marium was standing next to her father's body at the emergency department of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
"A piece of iron struck my father on his head when he was in the market. He died on the spot," said Shamsul's daughter Bibi Marium.
Shamsul has three daughters and a son.
According to locals, the explosion, which took place around 4:30pm, was felt in surrounding areas over at least two sqkm.
A resident of a house next to the oxygen plant, Lokman, told The Daily Star, "I heard a loud explosion at the oxygen plant in the afternoon. As a result, the doors and windows of houses near the plant broke down. The locals have moved away from their houses in fear."
Idris Bepari, owner of a shop next to the oxygen plant, told The Daily Star, "Iron and wood pieces flew in all directions after the explosion at the oxygen plant. After the explosion, we saw some of the injured being taken to the hospital from inside the plant."
