Girl with disability dead after fire breaks out in Vatara shanty
A girl with disability was burnt to death after a fire broke out at a shanty in Dhaka's Vatara area tonight.
The deceased was Rabeya Akter Mim (12), a girl with intellectual disability who had difficulty walking, fire officials said.
The fire originated around 8:15pm at the house near a water pump in Saiednagar area. Two firefighting units managed to douse it after nearly one hour, said Dewan Azad, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.
The girl was alone in the room when the fire started, Shahidur Rahman Ridoy, of Baridhara Fire Station, told The Daily Star.
Her father Abdul Mannan, a security guard, was in Gulshan and mother was in neighbour's house. As the fire originated, the girl could not run to safety, he said, adding the blaze spread before her mother and neighbours came to rescue her.
Fire officials suspected that electrical short-circuit caused the fire.
