Crashes claim eight lives in three districts
At least eight people were killed and three others injured in road accidents in three districts yesterday.
Of them, five died in a head-on collision between a bus and a battery-run three-wheeler on Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Gaibandaha. Three others were injured in the accident.
The dead are Ashraf Ali, 70, Nazrul Islam Tuku, 65, Sujon Kumar Biswas, 38, Mohammad Ripon, 32, and Sohag Sheikh, 19, all from Gaibandha's Gobindaganj upazila, said police.
Arif Anwar, station officer of Gobindaganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said all the victims were passengers of the three-wheeler.
Khairul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Highway Police Station, said a Rangpur-bound bus of Hanif Paribahan collided with the three-wheeler around 7:00am.
The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene, leaving the partially-damaged bus on the spot. A few hours later, police arrested the bus driver from Mokamtala Bazar area in Bogura's Shibganj upazila, he said.
A case has been filed with Gobindaganj Police Station in connection with the accident in which the driver was accused of killing people by reckless driving, said Mostafizur Rahman, inspector of Gobindaganj Police Station.
Asked, OC Khairul said the three-wheeler was plying on the highway in the morning, violating the law and dodging the law enforcers.
In Dinajpur, two people were killed in a road accident at Panchbari in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The victims are Narayan Chandra Roy, 40, and Shosodhar Babu Roy, 55, both of Chawkrampur village in the same upazila, said police.
Mozzaffar Hossain, OC of Dinajpur Sadar Police Station, said the duo was travelling by a rickshaw-van and a speedy truck hit them from behind, leaving Narayan dead on the spot.
Locals rescued Shosodhar and took him to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital where he was pronounced dead, he added.
In Joypurhat, a teenage boy was killed in a road accident at Tilokpur village in Akkelpur upazila yesterday morning.
The victim is Arafat Hossain, 15, a motorbike mechanic in the area.
According to locals and police, he was riding a motorbike after repairing it. A speedy truck hit him that moment, leaving him dead on spot.
