Cox's Bazar trawler capsize: Death toll now 7
The bodies of two more fishermen who went missing after a fishing trawler capsized in the sea near Nazirartek point of Bay of Bengal in Cox's Bazar due to a storm have been recovered by the coast guard.
Till now, the bodies of seven fishermen out of the eight missing people have been recovered. Police said another fisherman is still missing in the incident, reports our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.
Inspector (Investigation) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Selim Uddin said local fishermen recovered five bodies from different areas of the Bay adjacent to the mouth of the Bakkhali River in Cox's Bazar at different times this morning and afternoon (August 21, 2002).
The bodies of Hossain Ahmed, Azizul Haque and Mohammad Absar, were recovered in the morning. All the fishermen hailed from Purbo Hamzar Deil Adarsha village of Khurushkul union of Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar.
The bodies of Nazir Hossain (28) and Nurul Islam (35) of the same village were recovered from the Bay this evening.
The bodies of Md Ayub and Saiful Islam of the same union were recovered yesterday.
Khorshed Alam Babu (28) of Purbo Hamza's Del Adarsha village in Khurushkul union, is still missing.
Police said the incident took place on Friday afternoon when a fishing trawler named FB Mayer Doa capsized in the sea near Nazirartek Point in Cox's Bazar.
On Tuesday, the trawler, owned by Zakir Hossain, a resident of Khurushkul in Sadar upazila, went fishing in the sea with 19 fishermen.
Later, while returning, the trawler capsized due to squally weather. Coast guard members and other fishermen immediately rescued eight people but 11 were missing.
Later on Friday night, the fishermen of different trawlers stationed in the sea rescued the three fishermen who were missing.
Meanwhile, coast guard members during an operation rescued 44 fishermen from the Bay of Bengal today.
Among the fishermen, 21 were rescued from a trawler -- River Met -- floating in the bay due to a technical glitch near Akram point in Cox's Bazar, according to a press release from the coast guard.
Other 23 fishermen were rescued from a fishing boat -- Mayer Doa -- also floating on the estuary of the sea near Mohipur in Patuakhali, it added.
