Chhatra Odhikar Parishad demands immediate arrest of BM Container Depot owner
Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad at Dhaka University have demanded the immediate arrest of the BM Container Depot owner over the fire and explosion in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.
They held a rally this afternoon (June 6, 2022) protesting the incident at the base of the Anti-Corruption Raju Memorial Sculpture on DU campus, reports our Dhaka University correspondent.
They also demanded exemplary punishment of the BM Depot Container owner for the fire that cost 41 lives.
They have placed some crucial demands, such as to initiate a proper investigation to probe whether there was any negligence from the part of the owners, respective authorities, and irregularities of port authority.
Their other demands were to compensate the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident and to "digitise" the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
"Laws permit chemical goods to be imported, and stored, or preserved in a certain manner. But the owners [BM Container Depot] did so by breaking the law, as they are supporters of the ruling party," said Akhter Hossain, president of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad's DU Unit.
"Being a part of the ruling Awami League allows them to escape through the nooks and cracks of the law," he added.
The general secretary of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad's DU Unit Akram Hossain said, "The government has to ensure safety of labour in the future and take vital initiative so that labourers get their wages on time."
