5 drown in Dinajpur, Munshiganj
At least five people were killed by drowning today in Dinajpur and Munshiganj today.
In Dinajpur, a mother and her two sons drowned in a pond in Sadar upazila around 6:00pm in the evening.
The deceased were identified as Astami Debnath, 28, wife of Uzzal Debnath of Chuniapaa village under Dinajpur Sadar upazila, and their two sons Goutam Debnath, 8 and Preetam Debnath, 3.
Moksed Ali, chairman of Shasra Union Parishad of the upazila, said the mother along with her two sons went to a nearby pond to wash clothes, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Suddenly, she found her two sons were drowning. Seeing this, she dived in the pond, but, she along with her children went under and remained missing.
Later, locals fished them out at around 7:30pm, said Golam Mawla, inspector (investigation) of Dinajpur Sadar Police Station.
In Munshiganj, one person died while another went missing while swimming in Padma river.
One of the bodies was recovered from near Pier 16 of Padma Bridgein Munshiganj's Louhjung upazila around 4:00pm, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting Inspector Mohammad Mahbub Hossain, in-charge of Mawa Naval Police Outpost.
The deceased was identied as Soumya Das, son of Saroj Das of Tejgaon, Dhaka. While his friend, Nurul Haque Nafiu, son of Shariful Haque of Natun Bazar area of Dhaka, remained missing.
Both of them were students of United International University.
According to Mawa Naval Police, five friends from Dhaka came to Mawa area around 12:00pm and they took a speedboat to take a swim in the middle of the Padma.
At this time, two of them were swept away in the current.
The police official said, "A team of Mawa Naval Police immediately started rescue operation in the Padma river after receiving the news."
A special diving team of Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered the body of the missing person at 4:00pm.
Rescue operations are still underway to find the other missing person.
