16 missing after fishing trawlers capsize off Kuakata coast
Five fishing trawlers capsized at different points of the Bay of Bengal from noon to evening this evening adjacent to Kuakata in Patuakhali today (August 19, 2022).
At least 54 fishermen of those trawlers were rescued by other trawlers in the vicinity at that time, but at least 16 fishermen are missing, Ansar Uddin Mollah, president of Alipur Kuakata Fish Arat Malik Samity of Kalapara upazila, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.
Ansar Mollah also said that the Bay is under the influence of low pressure.
These trawlers, which were fishing in the sea, capsized after being hit by a storm.
The names of the missing fishermen are yet to be identified, he said.
Selim Mia, in-charge of Mohipur-Nizampur Coast Guard in Patuakhali, said: "Our patrol teams are at sea carrying out rescue operations."
Akhter Morshed, in-charge of Kuakata Naval Police Outpost, said he heard about the trawlers capsizing in the sea and the matter has been reported to higher authorities.
