Mustafa Monwar's 83rd birthday today
Mustafa Monwar is a visionary when it comes to expressing art, and he does so rather ingeniously. His eminence glows through his work as a puppeteer, sculptor, painter, performer, producer, TV and radio programme director. He is also a professor of the Department of Drawing and Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka and currently the chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy. Today marks the 83rd birthday of one of the most beloved Bangladeshi figures.
Son of poet Golam Mustafa, Mustafa Monwar was born on September 1, 1935. Throughout his illustrious career, he has helped shape the Bangali heritage in countless ways. His contributions in the field of puppetry during the Liberation War and much later are immense and well cherished, earning him the alias 'Puppet Man of Bangladesh'. He has received national and international awards, including one for graphic design in an All India Fine Arts competition in 1957. He received the Joinul Abedin Gold Medal for "his outstanding contribution to painting", and was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2004.
